I Rated a Billionaire Romance by Its Hand Gestures Alone
A silent-film experiment in which the hands do all the talking and the dialogue is politely ignored.

I muted the sound. This is not something I recommend lightly, since a voice can be half the seduction, but I wanted to try an experiment with the billionaire romance as a form. Could I judge the whole evening by hands alone? Cufflinks, pens, glass stems, the small hover before a touch that never lands. The answer is yes, dear reader, and the verdict is more flattering than I expected.
Begin with the cufflink adjustment. In this genre, a man who fixes his own cuff while watching someone across a boardroom is not tidying. He is announcing that he has all the time in the world and intends to spend some of it on you. I award that gesture one full breath on its own. A pen turned slowly end over end earns another. Drumming fingers lose points, because impatience is a very unromantic color.
Begin with the cufflink adjustment.
Then the reverse: the hands of the heroine. A thumb tracing the rim of a coffee cup. A glove removed one finger at a time, which is borderline theatrical but I forgive it. The best moment is a hand that rises to touch a collarbone and stops an inch short, deciding against it. Restraint, you see, is the real luxury. Anyone can grab. It takes talent to almost.
For the watching, wear gloves you can slip off during the good part. Short satin ones are ideal, and yes, you may be overdressed for your sofa, which is the point. Pour something served in a stemmed glass, because you will want to study how others hold theirs. If you would like this experiment redone with a particular title, say so, and I will tell you what its hands are hiding.
Final score: three and a half held breaths for the gestures, with the other breaths withheld because I did, eventually, turn the sound back on, and a few lines of dialogue were not as graceful as the fingers beneath them. Still, a silent evening taught me how much a drama can say with nothing but a wrist. Come tell me about your favorite hands on TheFriend, where I am always happy to be corrected by someone with better evidence.
